Stadium Maksimir
The Maksimir Stadium was officially opened on May 5, 1912. At that time, Građanski trained and played at the Zagreb stadium, and Dinamo took over as the host in 1948. Over its more than hundred-year history, the stadium has undergone several renovations. In the fall of 1997, seats were installed on the eastern and southern stands. During a facelift in 1998, the old northern stand was demolished, and in its place, a new and more comfortable stand with a capacity of 10,965 seats was built.
Since 1998, the new "north" has been adorned with a 15,000-square-meter, 200-meter-long glass-fronted building with business premises that
faces Maksimir Road. During the renovation, the "eastern standing" was also demolished, all in accordance with UEFA regulations that require
stadium seating to be exclusively seated. In August 1999, ahead of the opening of the 2nd World Military Games, the renovation of the
western stand with 12,600 seats was completed, along with 718 seats in the VIP section (presidential and eight other lodges, as well as 18
"boxes"). To make spectators feel more comfortable in the stands, new seats in the club's blue color were installed.
A little less than 15 years later, in June 2011, Dinamo decided to invest in the stadium, which had undergone significant changes. Although many considered this move to be merely cosmetic, the stadium saw several significant "repairs." In just over a month, a new heated pitch was installed, beneath which thousands of drainage pipes, heating pipes, and an automatic irrigation system were installed. A blue artificial grass surface was laid on the athletic track, and the brick walls under the stands were covered with canvas. New seats were also installed on all four stands, sanitary facilities under all stands were renovated, a special space for people with disabilities was built, the press area and journalist's lodges were refurbished, a new VIP lodge was adapted, and all lodges on the western stand were renovated. The stadium became visually attractive, with all steps and fences painted, and on the East, North, and West stands, the word "gnk dinamo" is written with white seats.
Maksimir stadium today
Maksimir Stadium has four stands marked as north, east, west, and south. All seats are seated, and there are no standing places for spectators
in the stadium. In a major renovation of the stadium in June 2011, new seats were installed, and a greater distance was created between seats.
Due to the strong earthquake that struck Zagreb on March 22, 2020, the east stand has not been open to spectators.
West
The West stand has 20 entrance gates. The upper stand has a capacity of 4,333 seated places, while the lower stand has a capacity of 6,371
seated places. Access to the upper stand is through two separate towers located beneath the stand. Elevators are also located in the
entrance towers, intended for access to VIP areas or lodges. There is a two-way access road to the parking lot for the West stand from the
south side of Budakova Street, as well as a passage from Maksimir Road from the direction of Svetice Street, or from the direction of the
discus thrower monument. This road entrance is used as a pedestrian passage and, in case of emergency, as a fire escape route.
East
Entrances are from the north side, Maksimir Road, and the south side from Jakiceva Street. From Maksimir Road, there is one official
entrance and 6 gates, as well as movable gates that fully open before the end of the match and are wide enough to allow smooth exit towards
Maksimir Street. There are 5 large Dinamo emblems adorning the entrances to the East stand. Due to the strong earthquake that struck Zagreb
on March 22, 2020, the east stand has not been open to spectators.
North
On the North stand, there are three entrances from Maksimir Road with a total of 10 gates. Two staircases lead to the lower and upper parts
of the stand. The lower part of the stand has a capacity of 4,950 seated places, and the upper part has 4,510 seated places. The lower part
of the stand is secured to prevent spectators from falling or jumping with two fences. The space between the fences is further secured by
stewards and is accessible in case of emergency for other services (emergency medical services, firefighters, police...).
South
The South stand has two entrances, and the filling and emptying of the South stand occur from two positions, from Budakova Street and from
Jakiceva Street, with a total of 3,931 seated places. Access to the stand is through two entrances, and all passages, staircases, and doors
on the stand are painted in a bright yellow color. The South stand is usually used for visiting fans and is divided into 6 smaller, evenly
spaced areas with steel fences, allowing spectators to be effectively separated from each other.
How to get to the stadium
By car
The stadium is located in the north-eastern part of the city, opposite the largest city park, Maksimir Park, in the district of Maksimir.
You can reach the stadium by car from Maksimir Street or Zvonimirova Street, as well as from Svetica Street (intersection of Svetica and
Maksimir Road).
During major matches (derbies in the league, international games, etc.), it's recommended to use public transportation due to limited
parking spaces (most of which are only available with parking permits) and special traffic regulations and road closures on match days.
By tram
Zagreb Electric Tram (ZET) trams will take you very close to the stadium entrances. Trams number 4, 5, 7, 11, and 12 run to the stops on Maksimir Road, while trams number 1, 9, and 17 run to the stops at Svetica. You can find a detailed list of tram and bus lines on the ZET map.
Organization of major events
In addition to football matches, some of the most famous concerts in Croatia have been held at Maksimir Stadium. In 1990, as part of the "Sound and Vision" tour, David Bowie performed there. Marko Perković Thompson also held a concert at Maksimir, and in 2009, the globally popular band U2 performed two consecutive nights of concerts at the stadium. In 2011, the band Bon Jovi also sang at Maksimir.
The stadium offers a unique atmosphere, and exclusive spaces within the stadium, such as the Maksimir Lodge and the Blue Lounge, can be used for celebrations and business gatherings. The Maksimir Lodge overlooks the Maksimir pitch from the east, while the west provides one of the most beautiful views of the city of Zagreb. These spaces are excellently equipped and have all the necessary equipment for organizing large business or entertainment events.
