In their fifth official match against Dinamo, Vukovar's footballers scored their first goal and at the same time signed their first victory in the history of their encounters. In the match of the 11th round of the SuperSport HNL, Vukovar 1991 team defeated Dinamo 1-0, confirming assessments that, despite being in last place on the table, they are a strong and brave team. The team coached by Mario Kovačević lost the first place with this defeat.
The decisive goal was scored by Jakov Puljić in the 53rd minute, after the players of coach Silvio Čabraja had threatened Dinamo's goal three times more seriously in the initial moments of the second half. Eniss Shabani sent a vertical ball on the left side into the penalty area, Lovro Banovec received it and sharply turned it into the six-yard box. There, on the "far post", Puljić appeared, threw himself at the ball and slid into the goal with it.
Dinamo created an opportunity in the 29th minute on a heavy and soft pitch, further soaked by heavy rain. Luka Stojković received a long ball on the left side, initiated the attack and then struck fiercely with his left foot. Goalkeeper Marino Bulat parried the ball, but during that shot, Stojković twisted his ankle by putting weight on his right foot, and as a result, he left the field injured. He was replaced by Arbër Hoxha, who stepped in on the left wing while Gabriel Vidović moved from that position to the center of the midfield.
In the injury time of the first half, goalkeeper Bulat sent a long ball, Niko Galešić jumped for it in front of Dinamo's penalty area. As the defender from Maksimir was going for the ball, Robin Gonzalez pushed him with his hands. In the continuation of the action, I found myself in front of goalkeeper Ivan Nevistić and scored, but the referee called a foul.
The people of Vukovar started fiercely in the second half of the match. Already in the first action upon returning to the field, Alen Jurilj sent a sharp short low ball from the right, which was skillfully picked up by Puljić in the six-yard box. The ball was sliding into the opposite lower corner, but Nevistić managed to catch it.
Once again, Jurilj, a former member of Dinamo's youth team, sprinted down the right wing in the 49th minute, played a sharp pass back to Gonzalez who aimed from about ten meters in full stride. The ball grazed Dinamo's defender and flew past the goalpost.
In the following action, Puljić won the ball on Dinamo's half, played through the ever-present Gonzalez, who broke through on the left side in front of Nevistić and launched the ball past the near post.
So, all of this was a prelude to the goal that appeared in the 53rd minute...
Kerim Çalhanoglu also tried in the 66th minute, he took a strong shot from the left corner of the penalty area, but Nevistić intervened.
The only serious attempt by Dinamo in the first half was in the 79th minute when Cardoso Varela sharply shot from the right, completely angled, and Bulat "pulled out" the ball from under the crossbar.
