Three goals scored, hit crossbar, numerous chances and a brilliant Dinamo performance warmed up the fans in this snowy and cold weather. In the 14th round of the SuperSport HNL, the Blues defeated Varaždin 3-1 and earned applause from the Maksimir fans.
Goalkeeper Ivan Filipović played his first league match in Dinamo's jersey, while young players Noa Mikić and Fran Topić recorded their debut minutes in the current season.
After half an hour of play, Dinamo's team "warmed up" their engines and activated the turbocharger, racing to a two-goal lead within six minutes.
First, the playful, energetic, and omnipresent Miha Zajc played a pass to Mateo Lisica in the penalty area in the 26th minute, but goalkeeper Oliver Zelenika managed to stop his shot. In the next action, Scott McKenna aimed with his foot after a corner kick, but the guests cleared the ball in front of the goal line. After another Dinamo attack, Varaždin defender Luka Škaričić swung towards the ball, which then bounced in a large arc towards the visiting goal and hit the top part of the crossbar.
The Blues took the lead in the 31st minute from a simple play. Zajc crossed from a free kick on the right side, and Sergi Dominguez headed into the opposite bottom corner amidst the chaos.
Six minutes later, McKenna initiated the action from deep in his own half on the left side, launched a long diagonal to the right wing, where Lisica received the ball, turned at the top of the six-yard box, and Arbër Hoxha ran in and slammed it into the goal.
In the same furious rhythm, Dinamo jumped into the second half of the match. Matteo Perez Vinlöf and Lisica combined on the left side, Hoxha made a sharp move towards the goal, played a one-two with Zajec who skillfully returned the ball to him with his heel... Hoxha accepted it and calmly aimed for the opposite "small net".
Soon after, Zajc was on the verge of scoring again twice within a minute. First, he took a shot from 18 meters on the left side and hit the crossbar, with the ball bouncing off the back of goalkeeper Zelenika and "dancing" in front of the goal line before rolling out for a corner. In the next play, Zajc volleyed from about ten meters just above the crossbar.
Perez Vinlöf in the 62nd minute initiated an attack on the left side, sped through the opponent's defense, sharply crossed to the six-yard box where Lisica was just a bit short to connect.
However, the guests managed to find a corridor towards the goal in the final minutes of the match. Škaričić shot from twenty meters, the ball grazed Josip Mišić on its way and deceived the goalkeeper, shining in the net.
