Dinamo celebrate victory over Rijeka, Stojković scores twice
Dinamo – Rijeka 2-1
It was a sequence of events that recalled the recent Cup final: Dinamo beat Rijeka with two goals, and once again Luka Stojković was the double scorer... The only difference is that Dinamo won that match 2-0, while this Tuesday, in Round 11 of the SuperSport HNL, the scoreline was a somewhat more “modest” 2-1.
Dinamo started on the front foot with a high press, and came close to taking the lead before the first minute was even up. Dion Drena Beljo intercepted the ball on the left, close to the Rijeka penalty area, just as the visitors' centre-back and captain, Ante Majstorović, was playing it back to his goalkeeper. Beljo won the ball and whipped a sharp, low cross in front of goal. Dani Rodriguez ran onto it, but Anel Husić cleared it right on the goal line. Only 44 seconds had passed on the clock.
The match then settled into calmer waters, with little excitement in the opening half hour. Only Toni Fruk threatened Dinamo's goal, with a header in the 7th minute that went wide.
The Blues “announced” their first goal in the 33rd minute. Miha Zajc delivered a free kick from the left, not far from the corner of the penalty area, and Stjepan Radeljić met it with a diving header, but it went just wide of the goal.
Two minutes later, the Rijeka net rippled. Arbër Hoxha drove infield from the left, cutting diagonally toward the centre and slipping between two defenders, before playing a superb, incisive through ball. Beljo controlled it, reached the byline and, with a lightning-quick turn, sent a low left-footed cross to about ten metres out, where Luka Stojković ran in and fired it into the roof of the net, just under the crossbar.
Dinamo threatened again right at the start of the second half, much as they had at the start of the match. Bruno Goda crossed, the goalkeeper parried, and Zajc, from the left and about ten metres out, aimed for the near corner. The ball flew just past the post.
The Maksimir side created a brilliant move in the 58th minute. Captain Josip Mišić played the ball to Stojković, who sent it out to the right, where Dani Rodriguez appeared and delivered a short, vertical pass for the overlapping Niko Galešić. The Dinamo defender cut the ball back for Zajc, who struck it first time, but goalkeeper Igor Vekić saved with his foot right on the line.
Rijeka got back into the match with a goal in the 63rd minute. Mladen Devetak led the attack down the left and played a short pass into the penalty area, where Samuele Vignato received the ball and, unchallenged, placed it precisely into the far corner.
The winning goal, which sent the stands into raptures, was scored by Stojković after a brilliant piece of play from Mišić. The Dinamo captain won the ball in the centre circle, drove forward with it and played a diagonal pass to the right for Stojković, who, from 18 metres, curled a superb left-footed shot into the near bottom corner.
