Dinamo Juniors defeat Hajduk and confirm their dominance!
The Blues celebrate against their biggest rivals despite playing with ten men
Even before the match, it was already known that they were champions. And double crown winners. But Saturday morning was definitely not reserved just for going through the motions. Dinamo's juniors played their "celebration" match against eternal rivals Hajduk, and on the main pitch of Maksimir Stadium no less. Entry was open to spectators in the lower West Stand, and they came in good numbers to support the champions.
More than enough motivation for Jerko Leko's boys to give their all in the last match of the season, and bid farewell to it with a victory.
Already in the sixth minute, Dinamo threatened. Patrik Horvat went down the left flank and crossed the ball in front of goal, but the ball went just wide of the post.
In the 11th minute, Hajduk got their chance through Filip Bokan who found himself one-on-one with our goalkeeper Taijo Žnuderl, but fortunately he wasn't accurate.
Our players had a big opportunity in the 39th minute. Tomas Baković took a corner kick, the ball reached captain Marko Zebić, whose shot was saved by Hajduk's goalkeeper.
And then came a "crazy" finish to the first half.
In the 41st minute, a Whites attacker broke away from our defence and got to the ball first about 40 metres from goal. Žnuderl stopped him with a foul, and referee Kolarić showed him a straight red card.
But Dinamo wasn't fazed by this, as Jerko Leko's players soon took the lead. Josip Brundić took a free kick just outside the visitors' penalty area, slipping the ball to Mislav Ćutuk, who was ruthless and found the far corner to give us the lead at half-time.
In the second 45 minutes, someone might have expected, given the numerical situation, that Hajduk would press forward, but it was quite the opposite.
Dinamo was the superior side even with a man down, and had their first chance in the 52nd minute, when Baković's attempt from the edge of the penalty area was stopped by Ivan Pocrnjić.
The match quietened down until the 73rd minute, when Horvat once again broke down the flank and tried to score from a slight angle, but the ball hit the side netting.
The visitors' only real chance came in the 83rd minute, when Sebastian Kajtazi shot over the goal from a promising position.
The last chance of the match fell to Dinamo. Baković took a corner, and Vuk Vlahović rattled the goalframe with his header.
"We've already had several situations this season where we had a player sent off, and then played even better. Perhaps it mobilises the team, they run more, so I believe we deserved to win. It's nice to conclude the season with a triumph against our biggest rivals. I congratulate all the players and members of the coaching staff, this season was really long, but ultimately very successful", were the first impressions of Dinamo's strategist Jerko Leko.
"We're very happy and satisfied and I think we've shown that we deservedly won the double crown. Now comes a well-deserved rest and then very soon preparations for the new season. As for Hajduk, it was challenging to play with a man down, but we showed we're a real team and deserved to win", emphasised reliable centre-back Nikola Radnić.
It should also be highlighted that Dinamo has the two most prolific scorers of this season's championship - Ćutuk is the best with 17 goals, while Leonardo Perković added 14 goals.
After the match followed a solemn ceremony for the presentation of trophies and medals, which put the finishing touch on this super successful season.
The juniors, besides the double crown, also played in the semi-finals of the very strong Premier League International Cup and the final of the renowned international tournament in Zürich, while at the beginning of the season they also won the Mladen Ramljak Memorial Tournament.
Most of these players will compete for Dinamo's second team in the second division next season.
Boys, hats off to you and good luck in your future careers!
