Leko: There's no greater motivation for players than a match against Real
Bennacer also came to show his support
The senior team mathematically secured their 26th national championship title on Sunday, and rightfully, all attention is focused on them.
However, we certainly don't want to neglect our youth categories, who are also achieving excellent results. Both in domestic and international competitions.
Our focus is currently on the juniors (U-19), who have secured a place in the semi-finals of the prestigious Premier League International Cup.
After eliminating Valencia in the quarter-finals with a comeback victory after extra time, they now face another Spanish club. And against none other than - the Royal Club.
On Tuesday at 8 PM Croatian time, Jerko Leko's team in London will go on the attack against Real Madrid in pursuit of their second final in this competition.
"There's no greater motivation for the players, this is a team worth €60 million on Transfermarkt. Last week their U-19 team won the UEFA Youth League, that says it all about their strength. Some of those players will play against us, and there are several who already have appearances for Real's first team. Still, I believe we can compete with them and that we'll show ourselves in the best light."
We also asked the coach what kind of match he expects from a tactical perspective.
"They like possession, just like us. So I expect a similar match to the one against Valencia. We'll try to press them high, because they take quite a few risks when building up play. The idea is not to sit back, we'll try to play our game. We'll try to calm the game down when we win the ball and not rush at any cost, because they get quite nervous when they don't have possession. Overall, we'll do everything to reach the final."
Dinamo will field a very strong squad, with some first-team players like Šunta and Varela joining the team.
"We're almost complete, we only have minor problems at the left-back position. Namely, Žaja is injured and Šimić who was his alternative, so we've brought up Paunović from the youth team. It will be his debut, a real baptism of fire against Real, but I believe he'll meet expectations."
An interesting note from the last training session before departing for London - first-team star Ismaël Bennacer trained with the juniors!
"He had a free day, and since he's still not in full rhythm after his injury, he asked to do a training session. We asked him if he wanted to work individually or with the team, and he said he'd rather train with the boys. In that way he also gave us his support, I thank him for that beautiful gesture", Leko concluded.
Here's the list of players who travelled to London:
Tai Žnuderl, Josip Burić, Nikola Radnić, Ayoub Abdallah Makhfaoui, Josip Brundić, Noa Mikić, Tomas Baković, Cardoso Varela, Krešimir Radoš, Karlo Zulfić, Sven Šunta, Patrik Horvat, Kaloyan Bozhkov, Marko Zebić, Mislav Ćutuk, Leonardo Perković, David Lagančić and Ivan Paunović.
Good luck Blues!
