Mislav Oršić returns to Dinamo
The great return
Mislav Oršić is once again a Dinamo player as of this Tuesday. Our celebrated striker, a favourite of the Maksimir faithful, the club's all-time leading goalscorer in European competitions, will once again play in the blue jersey with number 99. Oršić has signed a multi-year contract with Dinamo, thus opening his second Maksimir chapter after three and a half years away.
Over the past year and a half, he played for Cypriot side Pafos, with whom he won the championship title, followed by a cup victory the next season and appearances in the Champions League where only fine margins separated them from reaching the knockout stage. He left Zagreb in January 2023 for Southampton, where he spent half a season, and shortly after signing for Turkish club Trabzonspor in the summer of the same year, he suffered a serious knee injury that kept him out of action for eight months. After a successful recovery, he signed for Pafos, for whom he played from spring 2024.
"I'm really happy to be back, Dinamo has always been my club. We have great challenges ahead and I'm ready for everything that awaits us. Both the club and the fans are giving me tremendous support and I feel great responsibility, I want to repay them in the best possible way. Well, the feeling of playing for your own club is special. I've been following Dinamo all the time, whenever I had the chance. I watched almost every match so I know we have a very good team. Maybe in the first part of last season they weren't so well-coordinated yet so there were minor fluctuations, but in the continuation they really showed everything they could, won the double crown, scored many goals, conceded few... Now we must continue like that" – Oršić emphasized immediately after signing the contract with Dinamo.
Oršić's treasure trove at Dinamo is rich – his first stint lasted four and a half seasons, beginning in summer 2018, and during that period he wrote golden club history. The qualification for the long-awaited European spring in 2019, the hat-trick against Atalanta in the Champions League and against Tottenham in the historic comeback and great 3-0 victory in extra time to reach the Europa League quarter-finals, the decisive goal for victory against West Ham in London, the goal for three points against Chelsea in the Champions League are just some sequences from his impressive Maksimir opus.
Oršić, alongside Bruno Petković, sits at the top of the list of Dinamo's best goalscorers in the history of European competitions. Each of them has scored 28 goals. In his beloved jersey, he played 216 official matches, scored 91 goals and won a total of eight trophies. In each of his seasons at the Maksimir club, he won the championship title – five in total. In addition, he recorded a cup victory, two Super Cups and even five group stage qualifications in European competitions, including two in the Champions League and three in the Europa League, with all three resulting in knockout stage progression.
He scored 91 goals, provided 45 assists, won four penalties of which three were converted, so we can say he was directly involved in 139 Dinamo goals. He also hit the crossbar or post 17 times in total.
Besides being distinguished by excellent statistics, Oršić magnetizes fans with his emotional approach. Finally, his unforgettable remark in an interview with journalists still resonates in the minds of the blue supporters: "First let me correct you, I think there's no bigger club than Dinamo".
Mislav, welcome back to your home, we wish you much more success and joy in your beloved jersey!
