It has been 13 long, sorrowful years without our Ivan Turina

In Memory

Time passes, but the memory of his smile and cheerful spirit never fades... This Saturday, 2nd May, marks 13 years since our dear and never forgotten Ivan Turina left us forever.

Our thoughts are filled with melancholy, sadness and immense pride, especially when today at Dinamo matches, whether from the PA system or from the stands, the verses thunder: "Everything passes, all summers, all winters..." And again in the spirit of this old Zagreb ballad we can add: Dinamo's memory and love for our Ivan Turina will never pass.

On this occasion, a Dinamo delegation laid wreaths and lit candles at his final resting place at Zagreb's Mirogoj cemetery. Popular Joja, as he was affectionately called by friends, acquaintances, supporters and fans alike, was born in Zagreb on 3rd October 1980. He took his first steps in his native Dubrava, where as a boy he first put on goalkeeper gloves, and soon after in the immediate neighbourhood, at Maksimir, he grew up in Dinamo's jersey from his youth days.

He was in the Blues' squad for four seasons in which they won the championship title and three in which they lifted the Cup winner's trophy. In that period they achieved two double crowns. His last appearance for the Maksimir club was recorded in April 2010 in a 2-1 victory against Varteks in Varaždin when he replaced Tomislav Butina at half-time. Shortly afterwards he signed for Swedish club AIK Stockholm where three years later, on that fateful May night of 2nd May 2013, he suddenly passed away in his sleep at his home in Stockholm at the age of 33.

Always imposing and commanding between the goalposts, yet playfully childlike off the pitch, he attracted people with his subtle humour. He always had that hidden smile "at the corner of his lips" and was ready to stretch it into a full smile and in the spirit of a joker brighten up the company... And that's how we'll remember him.

Dear Ivan, you are forever in our thoughts, thank you for everything, may you have eternal glory.
