Inspired and brilliant Dinamo record biggest victory against Osijek in history
Dinamo – Osijek 7:0
A magnificent performance on Holy Saturday for a magnificent celebration! Dinamo's footballers delivered a masterful display, with relentless attacks that broke down the opposition's defence to record their most convincing league victory in almost five years, since the 8:0 triumph against Hrvatski dragovoljac. The inspired, brilliant and dancing Maksimir team defeated Osijek 7:0 in the 28th round of SuperSport HNL and thus recorded the biggest victory against the Osijek club in their entire history. The Blues had previously beaten the white-blues twice with a six-goal margin, and only in pre-war times, in matches between Građanski and the then Osijek Slavija, did Zagreb twice celebrate with a seven-goal difference, 8-1 and 7-0.
This was a match in which Maksimir celebrated captain Josip Mišić as well. In the 81st minute he scored the final goal of this match, and such icing on the cake had a special flavour because it was Mišić's first goal after three and a half years, since 13 November 2022. Interestingly, Dinamo also scored seven goals that day – they defeated Rijeka at Rujevica 7-2.
Maksimir striker Dion Drena Beljo increased his tally on the goalscoring charts, reaching an impressive statistic of 22 goals eight rounds before the end of the championship. Dinamo itself has increased its goal average in the spring league half-season to an impressive 3.7.
There was also a special atmosphere on the north stand where the Bad Blue Boys, as part of their series celebrating the 40th anniversary of the supporters' group, presented an impressive "retro choreography" that evoked the events of 16 December 1990 in Maksimir's victory against Ljubljana's Olimpija 3:0. The net was shaken by Davor Šuker, current Dinamo president Zvonimir Boban and Mladen Mladenović. In the stands, they reminded of the identical scene from that ancient match with a smoke screen in Croatian colours, red-white-blue.
Dinamo thus sent off Osijek with seven goals, but the first serious threat came from the guests. Samuel Akare pulled a counter-attack from the centre, slightly from the right, broke completely alone in front of goalkeeper Ivan Filipović, but sent the ball wide of the far post with his left foot. The Blues found the net in the 21st minute with a magnificent move by Luka Stojković. He struck with a right-footed volley from 17 metres from the left and launched the ball into the far corner. It was Stojković who two minutes later pulled a counter-attack, played in Miha Zajc, who passed to Beljo, who shot towards goal, but goalkeeper Marko Malenica saved the ball onto the crossbar.
Gabriel Vidović in the 31st minute decided to "copy" Stojković's first goal. Moreover, the Maksimir number seven served him the ball, a long diagonal from the right side, Vidović controlled it effectively and in the next movement set it up on his right foot and from 14 metres launched it into almost the same place as Stojković.
The omnipresent, brilliant scorer, assistant, passer and playmaker, the inspired Stojković, in the 42nd minute from the left briefly played in Zajc who was waving his arms asking for the pass. He listened to him, and Zajc first-time from 15 metres hit the far bottom corner.
The Blues increased their lead in the 58th minute when Beljo scored from the penalty spot after Mounsefa Bakrar was tripped in the penalty area by Domagoj Bukivić. Only four minutes passed until the next goal, Vidović shot in a crowded area from the left and found the corridor to the net.
Arbër Hoxha in the 68th minute was driving the ball down the left wing, pulled it low towards goal, and Beljo effectively redirected the ball with his heel for a massive 6:0.
The story was concluded, to the general satisfaction of the coach, teammates and fans, by captain Mišić with his first goal after three and a half years – he shot from 18 metres, slightly from the left, into the near bottom corner. And scored!
