Energetic play from the hosts in the middle of the first half, culminating in a goal in the 30th minute, steered the match in the direction Rudeš wanted. In the derby between city neighbours, Rudeš, playing at home in Velika Gorica, beat Dinamo 1-0 in the 12th round of the SuperSport HNL. The goal was scored by the former Maksimir winger, Chilean Junior Fernandes. The Blues played with ten men from the 72nd minute after Iker Almena was sent off only five minutes after coming on from the bench.

At the start of the match, Dani Rodriguez sent a ball in behind the defence, Luka Stojković latched onto it, raced in from the right and lobbed the onrushing goalkeeper, but Marko Stolnik cleared the ball in front of the goal line. In the very next minute Rodriguez fired in a sharp shot, but the Rudeš goalkeeper, captain Lovre Rogić, managed to push the ball away.

Rudeš first threatened in the 22nd minute, when the former Maksimir forward Junior Fernandes beat the offside trap and found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Dominik Kotarski from the left, but he hit the outside of the net.

It was a spell of sharp play from Rudeš; the hosts found their wings and in the following minutes came close to rattling the net. First, Bruno Unušić struck with his left foot from the right, from 17 metres towards the near corner, and Kotarski parried it behind for a corner. After the corner was delivered, Slavko Bralić headed at goal, and the ball hit the top of the crossbar.

Sparks then flew at the other end: Arbër Hoxha tried his luck from the left from about ten metres, but Rogić beat the ball away.

Straight afterwards, the home left winger Jurica Poldrugač raced through alone from the left, but in a one-on-one situation Kotarski came out on top and prevented the goal. Another Rudeš attack followed immediately: Unušić whipped in a ball from the right, Poldrugač “intercepted” it on its way, stuck out a leg as he leapt, and the ball flew past the far top corner.

The hosts found the way to the net in the 30th minute. The ever-present Poldrugač, on the left by the touchline, launched a long, precise ball into Dinamo’s half, Fernandes again beat the offside trap and, from 15 metres on the left side, lobbed Kotarski.

Dinamo set off in search of an equaliser. Matteo Perez Vinlöf sent in a cross in the 33rd minute, Dion Drena Beljo struck it powerfully, but Rogić got in the way.

Poldrugač tried a cunning effort in the 40th minute, shooting directly from the corner; the ball flew in a sharp, awkward arc towards the underside of the crossbar, but Kotarski managed to dive and turn it behind for a corner.

Perez Vinlöf crossed from the left in the 44th minute, Beljo met the ball at the edge of the six-yard box, and in the scramble in front of the goal it struck Stolnik.

The Maksimir side threatened twice more in stoppage time. First, Beljo rattled the net, but the referee, after a VAR review, flagged offside. Moris Valinčić then whipped in a sharp cross from the right, and Miha Zajc struck with his right foot at the near post and shook the crossbar.

Dinamo started the second half briskly and created three promising chances in the first six minutes. First, Zajc crossed from the left, and Beljo, in front of an empty goal, was a fraction short as he leapt. Valinčić’s cross from the right followed, Stojković headed at goal from the edge of the six-yard box, and Rogić stopped the ball. Hoxha then sent in a low ball from the left, and Zajc struck it first time, just wide of the goal.

In the 72nd minute, Dinamo were left with ten players on the pitch. Iker Almena was sent off just five minutes after coming on from the bench. In the opposition half, not far from the touchline, Almena and Felipe Curcio were involved in a duel. Dinamo’s winger caught his opponent in the face with an elbow and was shown a red card.

Despite being a man down, Dinamo continued to chase an equaliser. In the 79th minute, captain Josip Mišić played a through ball for Beljo, who slipped between two defenders, found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and placed the ball in the net. The VAR check lasted almost five minutes before referee Ante Čulina finally made his decision and disallowed the goal because Beljo had touched the ball with his hand.
