Coach Kovačević: We're not chasing records, but we want to score as many as possible because that's how we celebrate more
Post-match
We said that after this league break we want to be even better, and that's exactly what we showed in this match, highlighted Dinamo's coach Mario Kovačević after the masterful performance and 7-0 victory against Osijek. The match was opened by captain Josip Mišić who found the net after almost three and a half years, since the 7-2 victory against Rijeka at Rujevica in November 2022. When asked by journalists whether the captain will treat the team and coach, Kovačević's response was clear:
– Well, I'll treat him! He often treats us as a true captain. And how long has it been since his last goal? Three and a half years, since Rujevica? There you go, we have to score seven goals for him to get on the scoresheet, ha ha ha... He deserved it, he's been playing brilliantly all season. He's a real leader, it wasn't easy at the beginning, but we believed matches like this would come. What's important is that we play well and I'm delighted that Mišić scored. I congratulate him from the heart.
Inspired Luka Stojković also delivered a brilliant performance. Just that move, the volley into the top corner for the first goal, was pure magic, and SofaScore rated it a perfect ten. Does this increase his chances of making the World Cup squad?
– I've said it before, the pitch and matches are the only measure for national team selection. We know there's great competition in the national team, but if the lads continue like this... Just look at that first goal, not everyone can do that, a player really has to be class to pull off something like that. And his play after that goal was brilliant as well.
Dinamo is free-flowing in attack, with plenty of varied solutions, and currently maintains a record average in the spring half-season – as many as 3.7 goals per match.
– I announced that even after the league break we want to continue with victories and convincing performances. That's exactly what happened. Now we'll celebrate a bit, Easter is coming, the lads are free. On Monday we start serious preparations for the Cup semi-final on Wednesday away against Gorica. It's just one match, there's no looking back at what happened before. The players are hungry for trophies. We're not chasing records, we want to play well and win for the fans, and we know that football is played for goals anyway. We want to score as many as possible because that's how we celebrate more. Both the fans and us.
Dominik Livaković missed this match due to injury.
– It's hard to believe he'll be ready for the match against Gorica. It turned out to be a small rupture. Knowing Livaković, he probably thinks he could be ready, but he'll be out of action for about ten days. I believe he'll be ready by the match against Rijeka. But with him we can always expect something – unexpected.
At the very end of the press conference, coach Kovačević was asked a question by Domagoj Arambašić who got this opportunity through the Socios platform. Is this coach Kovačević's most beloved and/or biggest victory?
– Every last victory is my most beloved. There have been other high-scoring victories, for instance in the Cup. Well, I celebrate every victory of mine – concluded coach Kovačević.
