Coach Leko: I saw energy and unity in the players, I'm continuing with the first team and we're going strong
After the match
After the trip to Sunderland, I wanted to see how our players would react, and I'm glad they showed energy and unity, said Dinamo coach Jerko Leko immediately after the league win in Varaždin.
– It was important to get that energy and unity. It seemed that lately they had lost their guard and their confidence, as if they had lowered their gloves for a moment, and now they've raised them again. This is the real us, and I believe we'll continue like this. As I said, they showed unity, and the quality is there.
Dinamo ultimately won 3-1, and could have won even more convincingly.
– In the first half, Varaždin kept breaking us open with diagonal balls, so we set up a different formation and managed to solve that. After that, we dominated the whole time, there were chances, and we could have scored earlier. What matters is that we saw fire and the Dinamo spirit. Look, Dion Drena Beljo sprinted in the 93rd minute, and we know he now has national team duties.
The support from the stands was also superb.
– The fans once again gave us fantastic support. I think we've built what Dinamo must have, and that is synergy between the team and the fans. That is the only way we can win the championship title.
President Zvonimir Boban and coach Leko have meanwhile discussed how their cooperation will continue.
– Yes, we talked. We agreed to take it step by step. I came to serve Dinamo, it's my club. I'm continuing with the first team and we're going strong – concluded coach Leko.
Bruno Goda also expressed his satisfaction with the performance in Varaždin.
– This was a very tough away match. This is a victory for all the players and the entire squad. We breathed as one from the first minute, both the players on the pitch and those on the bench, we lived for the win. And you can feel that, both in the dressing room and on the pitch. Hats off to the fans as well, they were phenomenal. After the trip to England, they once again came in great numbers. Thank you for that – added Goda.
