Zebić: "Dinamo is used to winning"
The young captain on the double crown, senior minutes and his progress in the past season
Dinamo had by far the best centre-back partnership in the league this season. Sergi Dominguez and Scott McKenna proved to be a real "wall" for opposing attacks, and we conceded by far the fewest goals. When needed, Niko Galešić also stepped in very successfully, but in the second half of the season another name emerged. Young, promising, captain of Dinamo's juniors and the Croatian U19 national team. You've already guessed it - we're talking about Marko Zebić. The 19-year-old centre-back won a double double crown this season. Both with the juniors and the seniors. First, we asked him to tell us more about the young U19 team that won the Cup and Championship.
"As a generation we showed great unity and I think that's what defined us throughout the entire season. We learned to win. We weren't first the whole time, Lokomotiva had a six-point lead and many might have thought we wouldn't succeed. But we stayed calm, believed in each other and in the end brought the points to Zagreb and won two titles. Playing against strong European teams like Chelsea, Newcastle, Valencia and Real Madrid meant a lot to us because we saw that we could play on equal terms with the best."
The young Zagreb native also made his debut for the first team this season, making a total of five appearances. One each in the Europa League and Cup, and three (playing the full 90 minutes) in the Championship. In those matches he left a very good impression and showed that he is the future of the club. He also won both domestic trophies with the seniors.
"Making my debut for Dinamo's first team was truly a special feeling and something I will remember my whole life. Honestly, I didn't expect to come on against Genk, but those three minutes meant everything to me and I'm grateful to the coach for his trust. I will especially remember the derby against Hajduk when I played the full 90 minutes from start to finish for the first time. It's immediately easier to play when you know you have players like Livaković and Galešić behind you, and such matches give you additional confidence for the continuation of your career."
Zebić also had the honor and privilege of participating as an integral part of the first team in the historic "D Day", the day when real "madness" reigned at Maksimir from early morning until midnight, celebrating the double crown in front of around 40,000 people.
"The celebration day was truly beautiful from the very morning. When I woke up and realized how many people would come, how much talk there was about the match and the celebration, the feeling was incredible. Seeing the sold-out stadium, the south stand that erupted within half an hour and such connection between the fans and the team was special. After the match, the announcement, celebration and the entire organization were top-notch and it showed how much we all breathe together as one."
Marko is still not on vacation. At the end of June and beginning of July, as captain he will lead our U19 national team at the European Championship in Wales.
"Expectations are high, considering we have already beaten Serbia. They are one of our opponents in the group. We drew with Italy, and we'll see what Ukraine are like. We need to prepare well, but I think we have a good chance. Maybe even to win it!"
