Slavija Varaždin – Građanski 1-6 (path to the title)
It was a season in which the Zagreb club were "double champions". In the first part of the competition, they topped the Croatian-Slovenian League which served as a qualifying group for the final stage of the national championship. Građanski soared to the top at the end of the entire competition as well: they finished first in the Croatian-Slovenian League, and then won the national championship title.
On their path to the title, the Zagreb side strung together convincing victories, scoring six goals away from home against Bačka from Subotica, Slavija from Osijek, Slavija from Varaždin, five against Ljubljana and SAŠK from Sarajevo, four against Jugoslavija from Belgrade, and even nine against city rivals HAŠK...
In the 7th round match of the Croatian-Slovenian League, they travelled to Varaždin where Slavija awaited them. The Zagreb team celebrated with a 6-1 victory, with this complete "six-pack" scored by just two players: August Lešnik netted four goals, while Franjo Mara Wölfl scored two.
After this victory, the Zagreb side topped the table with 13 points. In seven rounds, they recorded six wins and one draw. Right behind Građanski were HAŠK with 12 points, SAŠK with 10, Hajduk with 9, Concordia with 7... Varaždin were at the bottom with just two points.
At that time, it was customary for the club management to publicly call players to gather before departing for matches. Građanski's team, for example, assembled that Sunday morning at the post office in Vlaška Street at 8:30 AM and departed by bus towards Varaždin where the match was scheduled for 3:15 PM.
The Zagreb side scored two goals within just one minute. First, Florijan Conjo Matekalo delivered a cross, and Lešnik scored with a header in the 15th minute. Practically in the next attack, Drago Žalant curled in a cross from the side, and Lešnik ran onto the ball again, launching it into the goal from 12 metres.
Wölfl rattled the crossbar with a powerful shot in the 21st minute, but six minutes later the hosts managed to pull one back. Inoslav Solerti delivered a corner kick, and Egidio Martinović found the net.
Towards the end of the first half, Wölfl struck powerfully from a free kick 25 metres out, the goalkeeper only managed to touch the ball which still bounced into the goal for a 3-1 lead for the visitors.
By the end of the match, the Zagreb team scored three more goals. Lešnik shot in the 60th minute when the ball slipped from the home goalkeeper's hands and rolled into the goal. Eight minutes later, Žalant crossed from the wing, and Lešnik headed home his fourth goal. Wölfl concluded the story in the 85th minute with a goal from 18 metres.
In the next encounter between the same opponents, but in Zagreb, Građanski won 5-0, and the Zagreb side had a four-goal scorer in that match as well. In Varaždin it was Lešnik, while in Zagreb it was Wölfl.
