Hajduk – Gradjanski 0-1

It was a somewhat capricious season for the Zagreb side, who entered it furiously, relaxed at times, then continued with brilliant performances before oscillating again... Throughout the entire season, in all 22 rounds, they suffered four defeats, each time by an identical 2-1 scoreline. They opened the league by first scoring five goals, then four, followed by a defeat after which they bounced back with six goals in their opponents' net...

In sequence, they defeated Jedinstvo Belgrade 5-0, then Slavija in Varaždin 4-2, after which they stumbled away in Belgrade against BASK, then outplayed Ljubljana 6-0 before losing again in Belgrade, this time against the league leaders BSK.

In this rollercoaster of results came the away match against Hajduk in Split in the 6th round. With such a record, Gradjanski were fourth in the table at that moment with six points, while Hajduk were placed just behind them with an identical points tally.

The match in Split was officiated by Italian referee Raffaele Scorzoni. The media highlighted that the match began with considerable nervousness from both spectators and players, but that referee Scorzoni "immediately suppressed the rough play from the start".

Gradjanski played with their full squad, while from the home team injured Anđelko Marušić was absent, so Zvonimir Požega stepped in, who, alongside his football career, also served as a sergeant in the navy.

The Zagreb side celebrated with a goal in the 15th minute. Vilmos Vilim Sipos sent a high ball in front of the hosts' goal. Goalkeeper Bartul Čulić rushed out and let the ball bounce off the ground. However, he misjudged the situation, so to his surprise, the ball bounced off the ground high enough to skip over him and land in the net.

Hajduk attacked, but Gradjanski were more dangerous, with threats coming from August Lešnik and Franjo Mara Wölfl... In the 30th minute, on the other side, Frane Matošić struck powerfully, and the Zagreb defender Bernard Benda Hügl headed the ball away. The shot was so strong that Hügl was left dazed and needed several minutes to recover. At the start of the second half, Sipos sharply cut in front of goal, the ball hit Jozo Matošić, deceiving the goalkeeper in the process and hitting the post.

At the end of the season, Gradjanski finished as runners-up, five points behind BSK.
