Hajduk – Dinamo 1-2

Dinamo entered the new season as defending champions, but the opening matches didn't ignite optimism for defending their title. The Blues recorded two wins along with one draw and one defeat in the first four rounds, but even with such a record they were only one point behind league leaders Red Star Belgrade.

In the 5th round fixture, the Zagreb team travelled to face Hajduk. Around 15,000 spectators gathered at the old Split stadium, while a special train was organized from Zagreb carrying around 600 Blue supporters.

Dinamo ultimately celebrated a 2-1 victory in a match where all three goals came in the first half. The Zagreb side took the lead in the 13th minute from a penalty caused by Ivo Mrčić, who stopped the ball with his hand in his own penalty area. Franjo Mara Wölfl converted from the penalty spot.

The hosts could have quickly got back into the game when Branko Viđak hit the crossbar in the 21st minute. Seven minutes later the net did bulge, but at the other end of the pitch. Željko Čajkovski played through Wölfl, who sent the ball across the goal where Zvonimir Cimermančić ran onto it to extend the lead.

The hosts pulled one back in the 35th minute when popular Dinamo defender Ivica Horvat headed the ball clear, only for Slavko Luštica to meet it on the edge of the penalty area and place an effective curling shot into the goal.

After that weekend, Red Star remained top with eight points, one ahead of second-placed Dinamo. The champions at the end of the season were ultimately Partizan.
