Vladimir Čonč passes away

A refined technician, dribbler and craftsman, witnesses of the era say that in his generation he was perhaps the leading midfielder, dancing in the role of right-half with number eight on his back before later playing deeper and "halving the shirt" by taking over the number four. Vladimir Čonč was one of the key figures in Dinamo's play on the path to two championship titles. Popular Čona left us forever on October 15, 2012, in his 85th year.

He emerged from the blues' youth ranks back in the days of Građanski, took his first senior steps at Zagreb's Poštar, and established himself at Lokomotiva, which in that early post-war period was a stable first division club. Moreover, Čonč recorded the club's greatest success in the former Yugoslav league with "Lokosi" – winning third place in 1952. Shortly after, he came to Dinamo where in eight and a half seasons he won championship titles in 1954 and 1958, and the Cup in 1960.

He was regarded as the best technician in the team, but also a player with a powerful and fierce shot. He shook the nets with long-range "projectiles" and had the trust of his teammates as the main penalty taker.

He operated in the role of right-half before retreating to a deeper role towards the end of his Maksimir episode, after Ivan Šantek went to military service, where he also delivered brilliant performances. He scored important goals on the path to the 1954 title, such as in victories in derbies against Partizan 2-0 and Hajduk 3-1, both in Zagreb. He was also the scorer and one of the key figures in the victory against Crvena zvezda 2-1 in Belgrade in autumn 1957 in the season when the blues won the title in a tight race with the red-and-whites.
