Sarajevo – Dinamo 2-0 (first defeat of the season, stumble in title race)
With their defeat in Sarajevo, the Maksimir footballers began to lose ground in the title race, and this in an incredible game of numbers. It was matchday 22 of a total 26 rounds, and the Blues had recorded 14 wins and 7 draws in the previous 21 matches. They were, therefore, without a single defeat. All until this stumble in Sarajevo. The paradox is that Dinamo went on to lose all four remaining matches until the end of the championship. They finished the season with five consecutive defeats. In the end, they finished second with five points fewer than champions Partizan.
The double scorer in the match in Sarajevo was home substitute Stjepan Blažević. He entered the game in the 43rd minute and scored for the lead already in the 44th. Sretko Šiljkut rushed down the right flank, reached the goal line, cut back in front of goal where Blažević ran onto it and slammed it into the net. He scored his second in the 55th minute, racing down the left wing after being set up by Asim Ferhatović Hase. Dinamo's defence stopped expecting the referee to call offside, but that didn't happen and Blažević became a double scorer. Reporters later highlighted the likelihood that both goals came from offside positions, as Šiljkut received the ball in a dubious position for the first goal. Dinamo, however, claimed in their complaint that home player Stojan Crnogorac committed a foul in the build-up to that first goal. Either way, Dinamo failed to take their chances, they pressed from the start but couldn't find a way to goal. They came closest in the 10th minute when Ilijas Pašić hit the post with a low long-range shot.
A minute before the end, Dinamo defender Mirko Charlie Braun was sent off for a rough foul and home star Ferhatović for a "retaliatory" charge towards Braun.
After this round, Partizan took over at the top of the table with the same number of points as Dinamo, but with a better goal difference. The Black and Whites beat OFK Beograd 3-1 in this round.
