Gradjanski – Juventus 1-1
The story was conceived as a two-day sporting spectacle, a football treat for Zagreb supporters, but in the end the sparks on the pitch flared into a "blaze of emotions" and ruined the entire atmosphere... Juventus were visiting Zagreb, and at that time they were the leading team in the Italian championship. In two consecutive matches, the Italians played against HAŠK on Saturday and against Gradjanski on Sunday. While they saw off the reds 5-2, they drew 1-1 against the blues, but in a match that remains remembered for its incidents as well.
A Juventus defender struck two Gradjanski players, far from the ball, which provoked an outburst of anger from the home footballers, as well as part of the spectators, who tore down the wooden fence and rushed onto the pitch. In the end, police had to intervene. A reconciliation match followed 11 years later when Juventus and Gradjanski met in two friendly matches seven days apart.
Juventus had been leading 1-0 since the first half, with Ferenc Hirzer scoring the goal, before Stjepan Pasinek equalised from the penalty spot in the 80th minute. However, the penalty kick, according to reports from journalists of the time, was merely the trigger for the incidents. Juventus players, as witnesses claimed, had behaved inappropriately towards Zagreb handball players the day before. At that time, handball, as the predecessor of today's sport, was extremely popular, and the Italian footballers had been teasing the Zagreb sportswomen, which caused public outrage. The discontent erupted on the pitch itself the following day.
