Varteks – Croatia 1-2 (on the path to the title)
After a full three weeks, Croatia's footballers tasted victory once again, defeating Varteks 2-1 in Varaždin and returning to the title race following defeats by Rijeka and Osijek. Mihael Mikić put Croatia ahead as early as the 2nd minute, hammering the ball under the crossbar from about ten metres. However, the visitors' joy lasted only two minutes as Varteks defender Silvester Sabolčki delivered a cross from the right, and Faik Kamberović headed the ball into the net from the edge of the six-yard box.
The victory for the Zagreb side was secured by Krunoslav Jurčić with a goal in the 74th minute. Robert Prosinečki delivered a corner kick, goalkeeper Marjan Mrmić casually moved towards the ball, but Igor Biščan also jumped for it. There was contact between the Croatia player and the Varaždin goalkeeper, the ball deflected off Mrmić's hands to Jurčić's foot, and he shook the net from about ten metres out.
After five of the total 10 rounds of the Champions League, Rijeka was at the top with a two-point advantage over Hajduk and Croatia.
