Croatia – Zagreb 2-1 (Cup won)

The same opponents on the same pitch eight days later... The footballers of the then Croatia and their city rivals Zagreb met in the Cup final, just eight days after the blues had won the league encounter 4-1. In the autumn part of the competition, at the ground in Kranjčevićeva, the Maksimir team had won by an even more convincing 6-0, so they entered the Cup final as absolute favourites who had, moreover, already mathematically secured the championship title.

The final that season was played as a single match, without a second leg. In a fiery encounter with as many as three red cards, the cup ultimately went to the blues. The first goal was scored by Igor Cvitanović in the 30th minute from the penalty spot after the referee judged that a tussle between Nino Bule and Damir Krznar constituted a foul worthy of the harshest punishment. Silvio Marić hit the post in the 40th minute, before Zagreb striker Elvis Scoria had to leave the pitch shortly after following a second yellow card, received for a rough foul on Srđan Mladinić.

In the 60th minute, also due to a second yellow card, another Zagreb player was sent off - defender Marinko Galić. The blues increased their lead in the 69th minute after an attractive move in which Daniel Šarić found Marko Viduka with a precise pass, and he stylishly flicked the ball into the net with his heel. There followed an attractive volley from Vjekoslav Škrinjar on the other side, but without finding the target... Zagreb nevertheless managed to equalise, with Željko Sopić shaking the net in the 77th minute. The Maksimir footballers, however, hit the post three times in this match. At the very end of the encounter, the blues' striker Marić was also sent off for time-wasting. The Maksimir team was led to the double crown by coach Otto Barić.
