Croatia – Rijeka 2-0 (Cup Final, First Leg)
The Maksimir footballers moved closer to winning their first historic Croatian Cup trophy. In the first final match, riding on the wings of the masterful Dževad Turković and the inspired Igor Cvitanović, they defeated Rijeka 2-0.
The Blues took the lead through Turković with an impressive move in the 12th minute. He won the ball with a sliding tackle from an opponent in the middle of the pitch, then in an unstoppable 'slalom' run past four players, played a one-two with Cvitanović just outside the penalty area before firing a powerful shot from the right side into the far corner. It was Turković who also initiated the move for the second goal when in the 48th minute he picked up the ball in the opponent's half, shook off a defender's challenge and delicately played it forward to Cvitanović, who skillfully controlled it and hammered it into the net from about ten metres.
The visitors played with ten men from the 41st minute after Alen Horvat was sent off for striking Cvitanović during a stoppage in play. In the return leg, Rijeka won 1-0, which meant that the Maksimir team, under coach Miroslav Ćiro Blažević, won the cup.
