With a 3-2 victory against Orijent, the Blues concluded a season in which they had mathematically secured the championship title much earlier, four rounds before the end. The Maksimir team had also won the Cup three days earlier, thus defending their double crown. In the final match against Rijeka's Orijent, the visitors took the lead in the 40th minute through a goal by former Dinamo player Damir Biškup. Krunoslav Jurčić equalised in the 52nd minute, and just four minutes later an own goal by Darijo Šimić put the reds back in front. The result was turned around by Renato Jurčec in the 57th minute and Zoran Slišković in the 70th minute. The Maksimir team was led by coach Otto Barić, and they finished the season with a then-record 21-point advantage over second-placed Hajduk.
