Građanski – Brazil National Team 0-0
In today's framework of modern times, such a sequence is hard to imagine. Immediately after the 1934 World Cup in Italy, the Brazilian national team stopped in Zagreb for a friendly match against Građanski. And they were led by the legendary Leonidas, then one of the best players in the world.
Brazil got stuck in the round of 16 at the World Cup in Italy, where Spain defeated them 3-1. Immediately after, they traveled from Italy to Belgrade and then to Zagreb. First, they played a friendly match against the Yugoslav national team, which featured three Zagreb players as well as Gustav Lechner, who would later become a half-back for Građanski. In a peculiar and interesting match with a total of 12 goals, Brazil led twice, but Yugoslavia eventually won convincingly 8-4.
Three days later, a match between the locals and the cariocas was scheduled. Zagreb media wrote at the time that Zagreb was gripped by "Brazilian fever". The match was scheduled for June 6th. Just when the spectacle was about to begin, a severe thunderstorm hit Zagreb. The date was postponed to the following day, Thursday, June 7th at 9 PM. It was a night match at Concordia's ground in Kranjčevićeva Street. The match was attractive and entertaining, the Brazilians, together with Leonidas, presented their football rhapsody, delighting spectators with their play and skillful moves, but the result was still 0-0.
The legendary Leonidas da Silva four years later became the best player and top scorer of the 1938 World Cup in France.
