Gradjanski – Genoa 0-3 (Mitropa Cup)
It was a unique "aero-football" spectacle. Just before the start of the match, an airplane flew over Gradjanski's ground on Koturaška Street. It circled above the pitch, gradually descending, and when it came within about thirty meters, thunderous applause erupted from the 15,000 spectators in the stands. The Zagreb correspondent of Belgrade's Vreme newspaper, Kosta Domazetović, dropped a ball from the aircraft which landed in the penalty area on the southern side of the goal, in the space directly adjacent to today's Vukovarska Street. This entire opening spectacle was organized by the Belgrade daily Vreme, and with such attractive scenes, the football encounter between Gradjanski and Genoa began. It was the return leg of the 1st round of the Central European Mitropa Cup. In the first match in Genoa, the hosts had won 3-1, while now, a week later, the Italians celebrated in Zagreb as well, with an even more convincing 3-0 victory.
Already in the sixth minute, Pietro Pastorino sent the ball to the left side, and Alfredo Marchionneschi, charging forward with a half-volley and with his back turned to the goal from about ten meters on the left side, skillfully lifted the ball over his head and spectacularly found the net. In the 12th minute, Uruguayan Carlos Servetti received the ball unchallenged in the penalty area and scored the second goal without difficulty. The Zagreb team could have briefly gotten back into the game, but Ivica Medarić struck the crossbar with a powerful shot from 20 meters. Two minutes before the end of the first half, Cesare Augusto Fasanelli concluded the story by stealing the ball from Gradjanski's defenders and scoring with a powerful shot that ricocheted off the post into the goal. Gradjanski was better in the second half, creating chances, but it wasn't their day. In the end, the Zagreb fans applauded Genoa's players.
