Barcelona – Građanski 0-1

It was a great victory, a success that resonated throughout Europe, but one that also had its concrete "reward". Građanski defeated the then-famous Barcelona 1-0 away from home, and this success, along with the enthusiasm of the supporters, was an additional impulse for the Zagreb mayor at the time, Vjekoslav Heinzel, to launch an initiative – the construction of a stadium for the Zagreb club. And indeed, a year and a half later, on 19 October 1924, on the site near Kupska and Koturaška streets, where the HEP building stands today, a football complex emerged where the club played until 1948 and the move to Maksimir. Moreover, Barcelona's president, Joan Gamper, sent congratulations to Zagreb mayor Heinzel on the great victory of the Zagreb team. Although the blues already belonged to the upper echelons of European football, the away victory against Barcelona had great resonance. This match was part of Građanski's three-week tour of Spain. It's difficult to make exact comparisons and measurements, but even in Spain itself they emphasize that Barcelona's generation from the 1920s was one of the most glorious in the club's history. The Catalans already belonged to the very cream of European football at that time, so this victory strongly resonated in the world media. Građanski had, it's true, played against Barcelona on that same pitch two days earlier, on Saturday, when the Catalans celebrated with a convincing 3-0 victory, although the Zagreb players, as the local media wrote, were competitive. A new match was scheduled for Sunday, but due to heavy rain and weather conditions it was postponed to Monday, 9 April. The stadium was full, 25,000 spectators gathered, and the biggest problem for the Zagreb team was that Emanuel Emil Perška was absent due to injury. The goal was scored by the then-popular right winger, Dragutin Braco Babić, in the 40th minute. Franz Mantler crossed in front of goal, and Babić scored with a header. The home team had a chance to equalize in the 72nd minute, Emili Sagi-Barba took a penalty, but Dragutin Vrđuka made a brilliant save, punching the ball into the corner. An interesting description of the match appeared in Zagreb media: "Građanski brilliantly showcased their short passing game and technical finesse in which they were superior to their opponents, while the home team had the advantage in speed, aerial play and shooting power." The Zagreb players left the pitch to applause from the home crowd. It's paradoxical, for example, that Spanish media even wrote that Vrđuka was the best goalkeeper on the Continent, and that alongside such a note in our media, on the same page appeared a text calling for help for Vrđuka: "Fellow sports enthusiasts. Vrđuka, that classic and unsurpassed goalkeeper of ours, has been left without accommodation. Anyone who might know of such accommodation, consisting of a room and kitchen, preferably not in the distant outskirts of the city, or anyone who could spare him a room with kitchen, is kindly asked to report this."
