Salzburg and Dinamo played out an entertaining and appealing 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Champions League 3rd qualifying round. Despite the promising result in Salzburg, the Maksimir side awaited the return leg at a disadvantage as Mario Mandžukić was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession. He received the first for dissent, and the second... Few people in the stadium understood why Dinamo's striker received his marching orders in the 4th minute of added time.

Nevertheless, Mandžukić scored Dinamo's equalizer in the 64th minute. Pedro Morales sent a long ball down the left flank, Austrian defender Franz Schiemer tried to chest it back to his goalkeeper, but Mandžukić was lurking and with a lightning-quick reaction, struck a first-time shot from the edge of the penalty area that lobbed the home goalkeeper to make it 1-1. Salzburg had taken the lead in the dying seconds of the first half. The lively and explosive winger Somen Tchoyi surged down the right wing, skillfully dribbled into the penalty area and played a cutback that Alexander Zickler fired into the net from eight yards.

Dinamo played well in Salzburg, created chances and came closer to victory, but later in Zagreb it was the Austrians who celebrated. Salzburg won the return leg 2-1, which meant Dinamo dropped into the Europa League play-offs.
