Although the Blues 'cancelled out' Hajduk's advantage from the first leg, it was ultimately the Split side who celebrated. In the Croatian Supercup return leg, the Maksimir team won 1-0, thereby matching the identical advantage that Split had from the first match when Ivica Mornar, following an impressive run and cross from Milan Rapaić, hammered the ball into the net. The Blues leveled the deficit midway through the second half from the penalty spot. Igor Pamić ran into the penalty area, where he was brought down by visiting defender Mirsad Hibić, and Igor Cvitanović converted from the spot for 1-0.

The match ended with that result, and since Hajduk had won the first leg by the same 1-0 scoreline, the Supercup winner was decided by a penalty shootout. In the first two rounds, both home players Igor Cvitanović and Fuad Šašivarević were successful, as were visitors Stjepan Andrijašević and Milan Rapaić. At the start of the third round, Split goalkeeper Tonći Gabrić saved Igor Pamić's penalty, but immediately after, Maksimir goalkeeper Dražen Ladić also stopped Mario Meštrović's shot. In the fourth round, both Sejad Halilović for the Blues and Hari Vukas for the Whites scored. Then, at the start of the fifth round, Maksimir goalkeeper Ladić took on the role of penalty taker. And sent the ball wide of the goal... After him, Igor Štimac stepped up and struck it under the crossbar, securing Hajduk's Supercup victory.
