Following a convincing 5-0 victory in the first leg at Maksimir Stadium, Dinamo progressed to the next qualifying round with a seemingly comfortable 2-2 draw in the return fixture. Hapoel Beer Sheva and Dinamo played out a 2-2 draw in the second leg of the Champions League 2nd qualifying round, which meant the Zagreb side advanced convincingly on aggregate to the next stage of the competition. Although a potential sensation and comeback was in the realm of science fiction, things didn't look entirely comfortable when the Israelis took a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute.

John Ogu opened the scoring in the 14th minute when he headed the ball into the net from four metres following a corner kick. Hanan Maman doubled the lead in the 34th minute after a one-two with Maor Melikson on the right flank, shooting from five metres at an angle. Petar Stojanović attempted to clear the ball off the goal line but was unsuccessful as it deflected into the net. Dinamo played with more composure and confidence in the second half, scoring two goals to eliminate even the slightest signs of concern among the supporters.

First, in the 49th minute, Dani Olmo produced a masterful through ball that took four defenders 'out of the game' and set up Mário Budimir, who deflected the ball past the goalkeeper with his first touch. Olmo also initiated the move for the equalising goal in the 54th minute.
