Sevilla – Dinamo 1-1 (5-4 - pens)

Celebrated goalkeeper Francisco Buyo saved two penalty kicks, then scored the winning penalty himself to send Sevilla to the final. The Maksimir players missed their chance to compete for the trophy in the traditional Sevilla football tournament "Trofeo Ciudad de Sevilla" after losing the penalty shootout.

The match ended 1-1 in regular time. The hosts took the lead in the 64th minute through Argentine Carlos Manuel Morete, after Orlando Lopez provided a headed assist, while Zlatko Cico Kranjčar equalised in the 74th minute with a skilful counter-attack. Nine minutes before the end, both Juan Carlos from the home side and Dinamo's playmaker Marko Mlinarić were sent off for unsporting behaviour. During the penalty shootout, the goalkeepers also took penalties. Both found the net: Dinamo's Željko Stinčić and Sevilla's Buyo, who later became one of Real Madrid's most famous goalkeepers in history.

In the first five rounds, Buyo saved Abid Kovačević's penalty, while Lopez was unsuccessful for Sevilla. For Dinamo, Kranjčar, Marin Kurtela, Džemal Mustedanagić and Stinčić himself scored from the penalty spot. For the hosts, Enrique Montero, Joaquin Pichardo, Daniel Ignacio Murua and Francisco Sanjose found the net. In the sixth round, Dinamo's penalty taker was Milan Ćalasan, but at the crucial moment, during his run-up, he awkwardly stopped, lost his balance and clumsily struck the ball which Buyo caught easily. Immediately afterwards, Buyo himself placed the ball on the penalty spot and scored for Sevilla's victory.

In the other tournament match, Betis defeated Roma 3-0 before going on to beat Sevilla 2-1 in the final. In the third-place match, Roma defeated Dinamo 3-2. Sevilla was led by celebrated coach Miguel Muñoz, who had previously guided Real Madrid to two European Cup titles, recording five consecutive and a total of nine Spanish championship titles. He later led the Spanish national team to the final of the 1984 European Championship.
