They got their revenge against Salzburg for the defeats from 2009 and 2014. On the final step before entering the Champions League, Dinamo defeated the home side 2-1 in extra time in Salzburg, thus returning the favour for the "defeats" from the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League in 2009 and from the Europa League group stage in 2014.

The Blues thus secured their sixth placement in the Champions League group stage. The 1-1 draw from Maksimir in the first leg promoted the Austrian team as favourites ahead of the return match. Moreover, the scenario somewhat reminded of that first match in Zagreb as once again Salzburg took the lead, and once again it was Valentino Lazaro who shook Dinamo's net, just like in the first encounter. In the 22nd minute, he picked up the ball in his own half, charged forward in a counter-attack where space opened up for him on the left wing, and from 15 metres scored for the lead.

Only three minutes separated the Austrians from qualification, and then came the turnaround. Petar Stojanović crossed from the right side in the 87th minute, Gordon Schildenfeld extended with his head, and Junior Fernandes at the "far post" struck first-time from eight metres sending the ball under the crossbar. The ball grazed the home defender and shook the net. That was the sign that the match was going to extra time. And after just five minutes of play, Fernandes caused "trouble" again. From the centre of the pitch, he brilliantly played a through ball into the counter-attack, and from the second line on the right, El Arabi Hilal Soudani burst forward like lightning. Goalkeeper Alexander Walke managed to "parry" Soudani's first shot, but the Maksimir striker sent the rebound into the net with his head.
