Slavija from Varaždin visited Zagreb at the start of the Banovina of Croatia league, which was actually a qualifying group for the Yugoslav championship. However, immediately after the completion of the group stage competition, World War II broke out, so the final part of the competition for the Yugoslav championship was cancelled.

Građanski hosted Varaždin at their ground in Koturaška and celebrated with a 6-0 victory. This was a record home win for the blues against Varaždin until September 2017, when they won 7-0. The Zagreb side actually achieved their record victory in history away from home. And it was in this very same season in the Banovina of Croatia league when they celebrated with an incredible 11-2 win.

Nevertheless, Slavija's lineup was missing their best player and goalscorer Oskar Bradaška, but the Zagreb squad was also without their main stars – Franjo Mara Wölfl and Milan Antolković. Their absence naturally opened up space for others, and thus Dragutin Drvodelić shone, making his first official appearance for the blues. And immediately, already in the first half, he scored twice for a 2-0 lead. Zagreb actually scored "in series of two": after Drvodelić, August Lešnik scored two consecutive goals at the start of the second half, while Zvonimir Cimermančić added two more in the closing stages for the final 6-0. His first goal, for 5-0, was scored by Cimermančić from 20 metres into the top corner.
