Dinamo – Juventus 3-0 (qualification to Inter-Cities Fairs Cup semi-final)
A resounding 3-0, furious play and a superior passage against the famous Juventus, a powerful team that had also won the Italian championship title that season... In such an atmosphere, Dinamo's footballers paved their way to the semi-finals of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in the spring of 1967, a competition that evolved into the UEFA Cup, today's Europa League.
The Turin side saved themselves from defeat in the closing stages of the first quarter-final match in Italy, but they couldn't manage it in Zagreb. After a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Turin, where the "Old Lady" equalised in the final moments of the match, Dinamo outplayed their opponents in the Zagreb return leg and secured a semi-final spot where, after a legendary comeback and victory against Eintracht, they later triumphed in the final against Leeds United to win the trophy.
Juventus was led on the pitch by the celebrated Spaniard Luis del Sol, a star of world football at the time. And it was a solid, superior Juventus team that season, a team that ultimately won the Italian championship title. However, they still couldn't get past Dinamo.
"Do you know what Lamza did to Del Sol? He nutmegged him once, then backheeled it to him, and Del Sol fell. Štef then turned to the crowd, spread his arms and asked: 'Do you need anything else?'", our popular Zlatko "Žoga" Škorić told us many times, who wore the captain's armband in the matches against Juventus instead of the injured Slaven Zambata.
There was, admittedly, a small chance that Zambata would return to the lineup for the return leg, but no matter how much he gritted his teeth in training, it just wasn't working... His number nine jersey was worn by Josip Gutzmirtl, just as it had been three weeks earlier in Turin.
The Blues played fiercely and attacking from the start. Already in the fourth minute, Marijan Brnčić charged down the left flank, crossed to the "far post", and Marijan Novak headed home for 1-0. Lamza also got into the game, delighting the crowd with his dribbling. This was followed by a charge from Hrvoje Jukić, the hero and double scorer from the first Turin match. After Jukić's run, Zlatko Mesić fired home a projectile for 2-0. Krasnodar Rora also got into his stride despite suffering a cut eyebrow in a clash with Ernesto Castano and playing the rest of the match with a bandage.
Rudolf Belin had recently returned from military service and showed his characteristic repertoire. In the middle of the second half, he took a free kick, slightly angled from the left side near the penalty area. He missed the goal by just a few centimetres... But about ten minutes later, he found his target. Another free kick in almost the same spot after the Italians brought down Jukić. Belin fired over the wall, and the ball sailed above the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Roberto Anzolin.
