Dinamo – Sarajevo 8-1 (Boban's hat-trick in goals and assists)

In a magnificent Dinamo performance with as many as eight goals scored, captain Zvonimir Boban recorded two hat-tricks – one in goals and one in assists. The Blues defeated Sarajevo 8-1 that day and were just one goal short of breaking the club record: their biggest league victory in the Federal League was also achieved against Sarajevo players, but not against the dark reds but against the blues – against Željezničar. It was in the inaugural league season, in September 1946, when they celebrated a 9-1 victory at the old Zagreb ground in Koturaška.

And while that nine against "Želje" came in the first season, this eight against Sarajevo came to life in the last season of the Federal League. It was a time when attendance at matches had already noticeably declined throughout the competition, so around 5,000 spectators gathered for the match against Sarajevo. It's truly a shame that more football romantics didn't witness this blue rhapsody because they would have enjoyed the spectacle.

Dinamo scored four goals in the space of 10 minutes, from the 17th to the 27th. First, Željko Petrović set up Boban who brilliantly wrestled free from three defenders, shot powerfully, goalkeeper Aleksey Prudnikov deflected the ball to Davor Šuker who ran up and slotted it into the goal.

The captain's recognizable masterpiece followed in the next action: Boban struck from a free kick 18 meters out into the corner, and goalkeeper Prudnikov was injured during his attempted intervention and had to leave the pitch. He was replaced by Hajrudin Čardaklija who conceded six more goals in the remainder...

In the 23rd minute it was already 3-0, Boban played two teammates through with his heel in a brilliant move, with Josip Jozo Gašpar rattling the net with a powerful shot from 25 meters. Two minutes later Šuker won the ball near the corner flag, crossed into the middle, and Kujtim Shala extended the lead.

At the very start of the second half Mladen Mladenović hit the crossbar, then in the 52nd minute Šuker crossed in front of goal and Boban skillfully headed it in.

Three minutes later the captain completed his hat-trick, this time from Shala's pass. The visitors managed to pull one back in the 59th minute when Muslija Ramović took advantage of a defensive error and found a path to goal.

The final two Dinamo goals in this "delicate" match came in the 62nd minute when Mladenović powerfully struck with his trademark from 25 meters and in the 87th when Šuker scored after a brilliant Boban move.

Dinamo's captain received a rating of 9.5 in both Sportske novosti and Večernji list, with the explanation that it would have been a 10 only if there had been stronger opposition on the other side.

Red Star remained at the top with 42 points in 28 appearances, followed by Partizan with 33, Proleter from Zrenjanin with 31, Dinamo with 30, Osijek with 29 points... Partizan, Dinamo and Osijek each had one game in hand.
