Just two weeks after their away draw against Leeds United, the match that saw them win the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, the Maksimir footballers began a new season of the same competition. In the first round clash they faced Romanian side Petrolul from Ploiești, and the Blues continued on the wings of their brilliant performances to date. Dinamo defeated Petrolul 5-0.

The Romanians later won the return leg 2-0, but the question of the final winner was, of course, already settled at Maksimir Stadium. Dinamo was visibly superior, controlled the game and it was only a matter of time before they would find the net... They created and missed chances, but everything that didn't work for them in the first half, came together in the second half.

In the space of just eight minutes, the Blues scored no fewer than three goals. First, Zlatko Mesić in the 48th minute 'announced' the goalfest with a powerful shot from 30 metres that whistled past the post.

They found the net in the 51st minute when Krasnodar Rora shot, the goalkeeper saved, Hrvoje Jukić ran onto the rebound, dribbled past the defender and from 18 metres launched the ball under the crossbar. In the 57th minute, Rora crossed into the middle and Ivica Kiš, running at full speed, deflected the ball into the net with the outside of his boot for the Blues' second goal. Less than two minutes later, the omnipresent Rora again burst into the penalty area and won a penalty which Kiš converted to make it 3-0.

Denijal Pirić launched the Blues' attack in the 65th minute, the ball was then picked up by Slaven Zambata, who sent it forward to Jukić who from the edge of the penalty area aimed for the bottom corner. Zambata concluded the story in the 77th minute with an unstoppable run that tore through the opposition defence, beating two defenders, rounding the goalkeeper and easily placing the ball into the goal for 5-0.
