Dinamo's footballers opened the new European season in furious fashion, defeating Turkish side Fenerbahçe 3-1 in their Europa League Matchday 1 encounter with brilliant play, high pressure on the opposition defence, and attractive attacking moves.

The Blues created a solid wall in front of their own goal, won the battle in midfield, collected second balls and continuously tested the opposition defence. Mateo Lisica broke down the right flank in the 21st minute, cut into the penalty area which led to a real scramble in front of the Turkish penalty area. In all that chaos, Dion Drena Beljo, surrounded by a squadron of defenders, managed to get to the ball, with the visitors briefly clearing it away. Dinamo's striker hit the forest of opposition legs in his next attempt, but when the ball rolled to him for a third time, he managed to place it with the tip of his boot into the bottom corner past the goalkeeper's standing leg to give the Blues the lead.

The Turks quickly got back into the game though, equalising less than four minutes later. After a corner kick Bruno Goda headed the ball clear, but Sebastian Szymanski ran onto it and from the centre, slightly to the right from 18 metres, volleyed with his left foot into the near corner.

Moris Valinčić led Dinamo's attack through the middle of the pitch in the 50th minute, weighing up the defenders, looking for position to shoot, but a route opened up towards the left wing. He played in Arbëra Hoxha who cut sharply into the penalty area, where Beljo managed to deflect the ball into the net while falling in front of the goalkeeper.

The story was concluded deep in stoppage time by Mounsef Bakrar after a brilliant move and attractive passing in front of Fenerbahçe's penalty area. The attack was initiated by Maksimir teenager Cardoso Varela who had entered the game less than two minutes earlier. He found Luka Stojković, who passed to Sandro Kulenović, who laid it off to Bakrar, and the Maksimir Algerian calmly aimed for the opposite bottom corner from the right side for loud celebrations from the stands.
